Planas sees in the transformation into biogas a good alternative for the treatment of manure

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has indicated that transformation into biogas is currently a good alternative for the treatment of manure generated in pig farms, both from an environmental and productive point of view, which some plants do.

In response to a question in the control session to the Government in the Senate, Planas has indicated that «slurry treatment systems that use natural gas are not viable, and more in the current context of high prices for this energy, ”details the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in a statement.

Legislative project on sustainable fertilization

In addition to the transformation into biogas as the most viable alternative, the minister has also referred to the innovative legislative project on sustainable fertilization in which the Government is currently working and which contemplates the use of manure and slurry as fertilizers.

Planas has outlined some of the initiatives undertaken by the ministry in this matter and with a future perspective such as the approval in 2020 of the regulations on pig farms that reduce the environmental impact of these facilities with measures to reduce emissions to water and air.

On the other hand, he referred to the state aid for investment in livestock waste management approved in 2021 and the Renewal Plan, which includes incentives for the acquisition of machinery for the localized application of manure.

The minister also recalled that the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan contemplates a line of almost 80 million euros of aid for investments in precision agriculture and 4D technologies.
