Piraeus: “We felt that the apartment building fell” – Testimonies about the powerful explosion (Video) – 2024-03-09 11:02:19

The tenants of the apartment buildings on Omiridou Skylitsi Street in Piraeus are shocked, after the powerful bomb explosion that occurred early Friday morning in a parking lot next to a gas station.

The first testimonies speak of deafening noise but also a lot of material damage to windows, entrances to apartment buildings and parked vehicles.

“I live right next to the gas station. Within seconds a huge explosion, we didn’t understand what was happening. We felt that the apartment building was falling. We hadn’t even heard our windows fall. All our windows on the side facing Skylitsi were broken. I live on the 6th floor. Everything was torn down. It was a huge shock,” said a tenant of an apartment building to Open TV.

“We jumped up, we couldn’t breathe”

Mr. Giorgos, a tenant in an apartment building opposite the gas station, described to ERT the moment of the explosion.

“It was around 03:20. Me and my family were sleeping in our house. Suddenly there was a deafening noise of terrible force. We jumped up, went out on the balcony to see what exactly was happening. White smoke was coming out of the gas station. We couldn’t understand what happened. What we thought the most was that because it is also natural gas, maybe something was done with it. We couldn’t breathe. The windows of all the apartment buildings below were broken[…] And in fact the shock wave was so big that it has also reached a hair salon which is down on the right side which has almost been destroyed as well. Of course, we didn’t know if it was a bomb or something else. Then we were informed what had happened, but fortunately there were no victims.”
