Piñera sends a signal to Argentina and promulgates a new Chilean Antarctic Statute law

President Sebastian Piñera moved this Friday until Punta Arenas, in the Magallanes Region and the Chilean Antarctic, to enact the law of the new Chilean Antarctic Statute, which regulates the actions of Chile in the white continent.

From the Maritime Zone Patrol (OPV) “Marinero Fuentealba”, the president stressed that “we are taking an important step to strengthen and better protect and more effectively safeguard the vocation and destiny that have accompanied Chile since its birth, and thus we reaffirm our rights, our presence and our sovereignty over the white continent”.

The Antarctic Statute is a framework law that systematizes, coordinates and modernizes regulations and institutions Through which the presence and relationship of Chile with Antarctica is regulated, which had not been updated since 1956.

Establish a Decentralized National Antarctic Policy, with programs and strategic plans; promotes the scientific research and development; and strengthens the protection and conservation of the environment.

Piñera expressed that “with this statute, Chile and especially the Magallanes Region and the Chilean Antarctic, are strengthened as a gateway and global development pole in terms of logistics, technological and scientific services, linked to the white continent ”.

The promulgation of the Chilean Antarctic Statute is considered as a response to the Argentina’s claims to increase its Antarctic shelf beyond 200 miles, which would contravene the interests of Chile and Great Britain.

In this way, and despite not mentioning the neighboring country, the president gave a political signal of sovereignty.
