The cheapest houses in the village change owners for one euro. The properties that are in a better condition cost anywhere from 4000 to 5000 euros. That is what the mayor of the town, which is located in Sicily, tells CNN.
“We have a tremendous amount of heritage to save,” said Mayor Antonino Camarda. Thirty years ago there were 14,000 inhabitants in his village, today there are only 3,000. “Over time, many people have left, leaving many picturesque houses empty.”
Get to work
If you are one of the lucky few who has bought a house for next to nothing, you will have to get started. Homeowners have to come up with a plan on how they want to renovate the home, and implement that plan within three years.
The village council presented the idea last month, and the reactions are already pouring in. “There is enormous interest from all over the world,” says Camarda.
It is not the first time that Italian villages put their homes on sale. Also in the villages Laurenzana, Ollolai on Sambuca houses have been for sale for a symbolic euro.
