Photos dating apps spread online: gay people Morocco abused

The violence started after an influencer on social media asked her Moroccan followers create fake profiles on the dating apps, reports British broadcaster BBC. She wanted to show them that homosexuality is very common in Morocco.

Exclusion from family

The photos they got from that are widely shared on social media. Three gay rights organizations have informed the BBC that violence against gay people has increased sharply since then. Human Rights Watch, a human rights organization, says that deliberately disclosing their sexual orientation can lead to exclusion from family and society.

The photos distributed on social media include threats and hostile comments. Some victims have already been evicted from their homes by their families. The fact that the country has a lockdown because of the corona virus makes it even worse for many gays.

“Terrible situation”

The dating app Hornet recognizes the ‘terrible situation’ in Morocco. About a thousand profiles have now been removed from the suspected perpetrators. Users are also informed and warned about the dangers.
