PHOTO: until the end of August you can see the exhibition “ALL’ARM”

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the invention of the Russian engineer and musician Lev Termen, which stimulates sound even in response to human hand movements. The sound that results from the reaction is unusual and mesmerizing, it creates a mystical, slightly scary mood. The term voxel is considered to be the world’s first electric musical instrument and is binding due to the unusual fate of its inventor. In 1919, at the age of only 23, Lev Termen became the head of the laboratory at the Abram Jofe Institute of Physics and Technology, but in the following years he developed security alarm systems.

Taking into account the peculiarities of the instrument-artwork, the main element of the exhibition “ALL’ARM” becomes the sound, which changes as the spectators of the exhibition move and move around the room. Scenography or the location of objects and their interaction with visitors also become an equally important element of the exhibition. The title of the exhibition “ALL’ARM” is both an ironic remark about the alarm devices created by Lev Termen, as well as a figurative reference to the Italian expression all’arme, which literally means “getting up with weapons” or “being ready for combat” and agrees with the artist K Brekte and M. Svilāns’ conceptual and artistic way of thinking.

Kristians Brekte (1981) graduated from the Scenography sub-branch of the Latvian Academy of Arts. He is currently an associate professor at the Latvian Academy of Arts and the head of the Environmental Art sub-branch of the Design Department. Since 2003, he has participated in several group exhibitions in Latvia, Europe, as well as in Russia and the USA. For the exhibition “Riga Madonna” (2010) he was nominated for the Purvītis Award and won the title of the Best Foreign Artist under the age of thirty-five at the international contemporary art fair Art Vilnius’12.

Modris Svilāns (1979) graduated from the Metal Design sub-branch of the Latvian Academy of Arts. M. Svilāns is an analog photography enthusiast. Participates in group exhibitions since 2003. In 2012, he organized a solo exhibition “Inertia” dedicated to kinetic art objects and black and white photography at the House of Architects. Together with K. Brektas, he has organized several joint exhibitions in recent years, including “Negative” at Cēsis New Castle and “HELIOS” at the Madona Local History and Art Museum.
