The opera “Orpheus” will be performed by the Independent Baroque Opera House “Collegium RIGA“conducted by Maris Kupčs.

“For centuries, the myth of Orpheus, who frees his beloved Eiridiki from the underground kingdom by singing and lyre sounds, is commonly known in the work of Claudio Monteverdi. The Italian composer Antonio Sartorio (1630–1680) interesting and atypical characters, such as a gypsy in Greece, would teach the centaur Hyron, the old nanny Erinda, “the organizers write about the staged work.

The opera was first performed at the Teatro San Salvatore in Venice in 1672. This is a time when, as theaters become more and more accessible to a wider audience, the boundaries between the aristocracy and the lower strata audience are being broken, the creators of the production remind.

The jealous Orpheus plans to kill Euridike in the forest, but when trying to escape from Ariste, Euridike climbs a snake and dies. Orpheus travels to the underground world to revive the Eurydice. Pluto, the ruler of the underground world, is defeated by his singing and he is released by the Eurydice on the condition that Orpheus will not look at him until they have reached the living earth. But Orpheus turns and Eurydice is lost again.
