The cardinal-patriarch of Lisbon, D. Manuel Clemente, presided this Friday at the celebration of the Passion of the Lord in the Cathedral of Lisbon. Unlike the usual Good Friday crowd, the Cathedral was empty due to the new coronavirus pandemic.

On the day when all Christians are invited to approach the Cross and kiss it as a sign of faith, only the cardinal-patriarch was able to do so, due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. But, as he highlighted in the homily, “the truth of what we hear and contemplate always requires, requires today, our presence at the Cross that rises in this world, plagued by such a serious pandemic. Praying and supportive presence. ” Therefore, Catholics will continue to celebrate this Easter in their homes.
