Philips Ambilight TV and Hue Integration: Latest Updates and Alternatives

Philips Ambilight televisions without Hue integration

One Philips is not the other. While the Philips televisions are made by one company (TVision), the Philips Hue lamps are made by a completely different company (Signify). They both stick the brand name ‘Philips’ on their products, but operate completely independently. The maker of the televisions has now officially confirmed that the Philips Hue integration is no longer there. There were already in the past various problems with this integration, for example because the Gradient lamps are not supported by the Ambilight televisions. And the Ambilight+Hue app also exists not for a long time.

In addition, many possibilities have remained unused. For example, it has never been possible to control the LED lamps of an Ambilight TV when the television is off.

Ambilight is the color technology on Philips TVs, whereby the colors of the screen are projected onto the wall. This gives much more atmosphere and provides an immersive experience while watching a movie. You can make it even more beautiful by connecting the Hue lamps to Ambilight, so that the entire room colors along. This is Ambilight+Hue.

With an Ambilight TV, you can let the LED lamps on the back of your television react to image and sound. To get it working, you need a Philips Ambilight TV from recent years (i.e. 2022 and earlier). You also need a Hue Bridge, preferably the most recent model.

The TV must be connected to the Bridge for it to work. Of course you also need a few colored Philips Hue lamps or light strips, because you cannot see them with lamps in shades of white. The lamps must be connected to the Bridge and you must have the Hue app installed on your iPhone – but that will often already be the case for people who already use Philips Hue. Furthermore, your TV must be properly set up and connected to your WiFi network at home.

You buy a Philips Ambilight TV from approx. 400 euros at stores such as Coolblue. At MediaMarkt you can from approx. 300 euros.

What now?
If you have an existing Ambilight TV, you can continue to use the function. If you are planning to buy a new Ambilight TV from Philips from the 2023 line-up, the link with the Hue lamps is no longer possible. You might as well opt for a TV from another brand. Signify has the Philips Hue Sync Box (that. 250 euros), which works with almost any brand of TV set. For recent Samsung TVs (from 2022), there’s the pricey $129 Hue Sync TV app that lets you sync your lights with everything on the screen.

You could use a Philips Hue light strip to color the wall. Signify also has special light strips that you can stick on the back of TVs and monitors. If you don’t feel like buying a Sync Box, the Nanoleaf 4D Lightstrip for television has recently become available.
