The vaccines from the Sinovac and Pfizer-BioNTech laboratories have lost their effectiveness in preventing symptomatic covid-19 but maintain their protection to avoid serious cases, according to a study by the government of Chile, one of the countries with the highest vaccination rate.

According to the new study of the effectiveness of the vaccination program initiated by the Ministry of Health of Chile – which has managed to vaccinate around 65% of the population with two doses – the effectiveness of the Coronavac vaccine, the most used in the country , fell to 58.49% to prevent symptomatic cases.

In April, the official study reported an effectiveness of 67%, while on June 26, the Ministry of Health indicated that it had fallen to a range of 63-64%.

As for Pfizer, which, because it was less massive, had not been considered in previous studies, an effectiveness of 87.69% was reported. International studies had previously placed the efficacy above 90%.

However, both Coronovac and Pfizer maintain protection against the development of severe cases of the disease.

“Protection against covid infection falls, but protection against the most important outcomes remains,” Rafael Araos, advisor to the Chilean Ministry of Health, said at a press conference on Tuesday.

For Coronavac, 86.02% effectiveness is recorded in preventing hospitalization; 89.68% for admission to Intensive Care Units (ICU) and 86.38% for deaths.

For Pfizer, 97.15% are reported to avoid hospitalization, 98.29% for admission to ICUs and 100% for deaths.

Chile, which began its mass vaccination on February 3, has managed to vaccinate 80% of its target population (15.2 million out of a total population of 19 million).

This Tuesday, the country registered 616 new infections, the lowest number since April of last year. (I)
