Petrol price continues to fall, now more than 6 cents less than at peak

The average national retail price of a liter of gasoline will be 2.438 tomorrow, according to figures from United Consumers. And with that, the steady decline in gasoline prices continues.

Last Thursday, the suggested retail price reached a record EUR 2,502. But since then, more than 6 cents has gone off. The price of diesel is also falling, from 2.375 euros per liter on Thursday to 2.311 tomorrow.

Oil price down

Fuel prices fall in line with the oil price. A barrel of oil cost USD 132 last Tuesday, today that is USD 98. In one day, the price fell by about 8 percent.

As a result of the war in Ukraine, the oil price initially soared in recent weeks. Russia is a major oil exporter. The price is now falling, partly due to hopes that negotiations between Russia and Ukraine will yield something.

Due to the high prices, the cabinet recently decided to lower the excise tax on petrol by 17 cents and on diesel by 11 cents. This measure will take effect in more than two weeks, on Friday 1 April. Similar measures are also being taken in other countries. In Belgium, for example, an excise duty reduction of 17.5 cents on petrol and diesel will come into effect next weekend.
