Peter Molyneux’s Innovative Game Concepts: From Dungeon Keeper to Fable & Black and White

One can love or hate the way Peter Molyneux has historically sold his new game concepts to fans (most likely the latter if we’re talking about the unfulfilled promise of Godus), and one can laugh at the “don’t believe his lies” memes, but one cannot deny that the famous creator of Dungeon Keeper, Black & White and Fable has always tried to create innovative mechanics and designs. It applies to a lesser extent when he makes fun of his own overhyped teasing in the funniest and most humble way.

The teasing, and then the very first details about 22cans’ new game, starts around 7:30 in David’s interview, right after the original creator of Fable shares his thoughts on the new trailer for the reboot we got at the Xbox Games Showcase.

“In the past, I would just start telling you about the whole game and the whole game design and why it’s going to be the most brilliant game in the world, and people watching this would get really annoyed and angry. So I’m not going to to do.

However, I think we’ve stumbled, and it feels like we’ve stumbled into a mechanic that’s never been in a game before. It feels like we’re taking advantage of these mechanics in a world and environment that might be familiar to people. And because it is in a familiar environment, it will be much fresher. And a lot of this is very mysterious, because I try to avoid telling you how it is. But it’s going to be much more of a Fable/Black and White/Dungeon Keeper kind of experience”.

With the latter in mind, he also reveals another detail:

“The only thing I can say is that, first of all, this is the first game I’ve helped code since Black & White. That makes it very special to me. Second, it’s been in development, and we’ve been exploring ideas for it, for almost five years now. So it’s very, very close to me. (…) Every single part of me wants to tell you all about it. But, you know, that would be stupid”.

Time will tell if he has just fallen into the same trap by talking a little too much about a project or not.
