Peruvian Judge Denies Former President Pedro Castillo’s Kidnapping Claims

Peruvian judge Juan Carlos Checkley, in charge of the trial against former President Pedro Castillo, told him this Thursday that he is not “kidnapped” but is serving pretrial detention as part of the process that is being followed for the alleged coup d’état.

During a public hearing, the magistrate addressed Castillo after he spoke and pointed out that he has been kidnapped for seven months and without communication with his family, according to the Lima newspaper Comercio.

“Mister. Castillo, I specify again, you are not kidnapped. There is a court order for which you are with a preventive detention order, ”Checkley told him.

The magistrate also told him that the objective of the hearing was to listen to the former president. “Second, yes, precisely, this hearing has been to listen to you and attend to the request that you make, as well as the arguments of the prosecution,” said the supreme judge.

Castillo Terrones is serving preventive detention that was issued against him in December 2022, after being arrested for attempting to dissolve Congress on December 7 of last year, being prosecuted for the alleged crime of rebellion.

At the hearing, the ousted Peruvian ruler spoke about the path his imprisonment is taking in the Barbadillo prison, in Lima.

“As it is a constitutional right, also the fact that I am here, kidnapped for seven months, that to this day I have no right to have communication with my children, with my parents and with my family. They can take away my freedom, but they can’t take away my right to communicate; there is torture of my family, my children, my parents,” said Castillo, according to a report in the Lima newspaper.

He also asserted that effective collaborators would have been fabricated in his case and that the power groups, as well as the press, were against him because he had not submitted to them.

“I am realizing, more and more, that in the case of Castillo; for Castillo the law and for my friends a coffee. Today I am convinced that the prosecution is a true effective collaborator of this de facto government ”, he sentenced.
