Peru receives its first batch of Chinese vaccines against COVID

Peru received its first batch of 300,000 vaccines on Sunday from the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinopharm intended for health personnel amid a second wave of coronavirus infections.

The Boeing 777-300ER plane left on the eve of Beijing, made a stopover in Paris and then departed for Lima, where President Francisco Sagasti was present during the arrival.

Sagasti, who will be the first to be vaccinated, said on his Twitter account “we are ready to start the immunization plan, giving priority to health personnel in the most critical regions.”

A second shipment with 700,000 doses of Sinopharm will arrive on February 14. Peru bought 38 million doses from the Chinese pharmaceutical company that since 2020 has been testing the vaccine in the country.

Three containers were checked at customs and will then be transferred to the National Center for Supply of Strategic Health Resources.

Hospitals in Peru are collapsed and it is common to see patients who cannot enter due to lack of space and medical oxygen.

Since March, when the first infection occurred, more than 42,000 have died and more than 1.1 million have been infected.
