Peru: Only 17 ICU beds with ventilators remain in Metropolitan Lima and Cal

The Ombudsman’s Office reported that it has analyzed the information provided by Susalud on the availability of beds in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as of August 15, and has identified three serious problems in the midst of the pandemic of the .

In the first place, it was identified that Metropolitan Lima and Callao are in a critical situation with respect to the availability of ICU beds, since the health facilities of the capital and the port only have 17 ICU beds available.

The Ombudsman indicated that this supposes a dramatic scene taking into account that a third of the country’s population lives in this area. The distribution of these 17 ICU beds in Lima and Callao is as follows:

  • 4 at the Peruvian Air Force Hospital
  • 3 at the Mother Child San Bartolomé National Teaching Hospital
  • 3 at the Luis Arias Schereiber Military Hospital
  • 2 at the National Institute of Child Health San Borja
  • 2 at the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases
  • 1 at the Villa El Salvador Emergency Hospital
  • 1 at the Oncosalud private clinic
  • 1 at the Callao Naval Hospital.

The Ombudsman’s Office indicated that the lack of transparency regarding the real information on the availability and location of these beds reveals the situations of inequity with respect to access to health services suffered by the population.

“In this sense, the Ombudsman’s Office reiterates that the data collected by Susalud, on the availability of ICU beds with mechanical ventilators, are publicly accessible in the COVID-19 Situation Room of the Minsa and periodically disseminated through the media massive ”, said.

Bed reduction

Similarly, it was observed that every day there are fewer ICU beds with ventilators available nationwide, the situation of some regions that no longer have ICU beds available is worrying

In this regard, on August 5 there were 147 ICU beds available nationwide, which have been reduced to only 118 in the entire country as of August 14, being that the regions of Cajamarca, Piura, Lima Provinces, Huancavelica and Moquegua do not have beds available. Likewise, the regions of Lambayeque, Cusco and Tacna only have one bed.

On the other hand, in Amazonas, Tumbes and Áncash there are two beds per region.

In addition, it is observed that some providers such as EsSalud or the FF. AA. and PNP, no longer have ICU beds with ventilators in various regions

In the interior of the country, 101 ICU beds remain available, of which 7 belong to private sector institutions in 3 regions (6 in Apurímac and one in Cusco), 30 to EsSalud and 64 to institutions that provide regional governments.

“At this time, there are no ICU beds with a ventilator available in the FF facilities. AA. and PNP “, Held.
