Pérez on possible arrival of Vettel: ‘Have already been approached by another team’ | NOW

Sergio Pérez was approached by another Formula 1 team this week, the Racing Point driver said on Thursday. He is expected to hand over his seat to Sebastian Vettel next year.

“There are a lot of rumors going around right now,” said Pérez at Racing Point’s video press conference at Hungaroring. “I was approached this week by another team, the name of which of course I cannot mention.”

Next year Racing Point will continue under the name Aston Martin and it is expected that four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel will be presented as a new driver within a few weeks. The German said on Thursday that “there are currently some conversations underway, but nothing concrete yet.”

Because Lance Stroll as the son of team owner Lawrence Stroll seems to be assured of a seat, Pérez therefore threatens to have to leave, although he is still locked up until the end of 2022.

“I still have a contract,” Pérez emphasized several times. “Nothing is certain in Formula 1, I also know that. You can only be sure that you will drive for the next Grand Prix for a team when the race starts. But I have been in Formula 1 for ten years and I am used to this kind of rumors. “

Options are limited for Pérez

The 30-year-old Mexican would like to stay in Formula 1, but his options seem limited. Ferrari, McLaren, Renault and Williams have already confirmed their driver duo for next season, while chances are that Mercedes, Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri will continue with the same drivers.

As a result, only Haas and Alfa Romeo remain for Pérez. At Alfa Romeo he could succeed Kimi Räikkönen if the 40-year-old Finn decides to quit.

The future of Haas is extremely uncertain due to the team’s financial position. “There are a lot of question marks,” said Romain Grosjean when asked if he thinks his team will still be in Formula 1 next year.

Because Pérez has a number of wealthy sponsors behind him, the Mexican can be interesting for the American team.

Pérez has started the season with two sixth places, which continues this weekend with the Grand Prix of Hungary.
