People express surprise upon discovering the true meaning of the abbreviation WC

The researchers note that in the 19th century, the word “toilet” was not pronounced in society, as well as the bodily functions associated with using the toilet. That is why then they came up with the term WC – “water closet” (water toilet). This designation was used for the new cistern-flush toilet, especially in public areas.

According to plumbing site Plumbworld, the term “water toilet” was first used in England back in the 1870s. First known as the “washbasin”, it soon evolved into the “toilet” due to its popularity, and then evolved back into the “lavatory”.
