Pentagon creates unit to study UFOs

The Pentagon announced the creation of a unit charged with officially studying unidentified flying objects, or UFOs, which will focus on detecting possible espionage maneuvers led by United States adversaries.

With the creation of the “work cell on unidentified aerial phenomena” approved on August 4 and which will be in charge of the Navy, it is intended “better understand the nature and origin“of these phenomena, said Susan Gough, a spokeswoman for the Department of Defense, in a statement.

For the US Army, “unidentified aerial phenomena” have nothing to do with potential green men, but rather with very real adversaries from the United States.

Washington is particularly concerned about China’s espionage capabilities, through drones or other aerial means.

The mission of the new Pentagon unit is “detect, analyze and catalog these phenomena unidentified aircraft that could pose a threat to national security, “the spokeswoman said.

The Pentagon “takes any incursion by unauthorized aircraft into our training centers or into our airspace very seriously, and reviews all reports,” he added.

The United States Senate took an interest in the Pentagon’s activities in this area in June, thus officially confirming the existence of an informal working group on this issue.

The new unit formalizes the operations of these soldiers and will allow Congress to more closely monitor the activity.

The Pentagon released three videos taken by Navy pilots in late April that show in-flight encounters with what appear to be UFOs. One of these videos, all in black and white, dates from November 2004 and another two from January 2015.
