Penitentiary Service expects increase in agricultural production in the region – Jornal OPaís

Ten acres of land will be cultivated in the 2023/2024 agricultural campaign, aiming to guarantee food self-sufficiency for inmates admitted to the Luzia Penitentiary Establishment, with a forecast of harvesting nine thousand and 75 tons of various products

In this campaign, cassava, sweet potatoes, corn, ginguba, as well as vegetables will be grown, which will help improve the diet of inmates and staff. The information was provided yesterday, Tuesday, by the provincial director of Penitentiary Services of Luzia, Joaquim Miguel, regarding the opening of the 2023/2024 agricultural campaign.

The person in charge explained that more than 50 inmates will guarantee agricultural production in the aforementioned penitentiary, whose objective is self-sustainability and improving their diet.

On the other hand, Joaquim Miguel highlighted that in the previous agricultural campaign eight hectares were cultivated, which resulted in the production of five thousand tons of various products. The Luzia Prison has the capacity to house 450 inmates, currently has 374 detainees and 185 convicts.
