Pedro Proença Denounces Unfair Points System for European Places

Sep 03, 2023 at 8:30 AM Update: 42 minutes ago

Pedro Proença, the president of the Portuguese league organization, denounces the points system in determining European places. The director thinks it is unfair that results in the three European tournaments yield the same score, a model that the Netherlands has benefited from so far.

“We cannot close our eyes to a deficient points system,” Proença said in a statement statement in which he discusses various developments in Portuguese football.

“A country that took 75 percent of its points in the Champions League has now lost a place to a league that takes 85 percent of its points in the Europa League and Conference League. Only because in each tournament the results have the same weight. is unjust, we cannot stand by in silence as this takes place.”

For years, Portugal held sixth position on the coefficient list, the ranking on the basis of which UEFA distributes European tickets. Last spring, the Netherlands conquered that coveted place. As a result, there are two places for the main tournament in the Champions League this Eredivisie season. In the Portuguese Primeira Liga, only the champion qualifies directly for the billion dollar ball.

Proença, who did not say exactly what he intends to have the system adjusted, does acknowledge that Portugal is not that strong across the board. “Miracles are being done, but the average teams are not able to be competitive in Europe. In doing so, they are hurting the other clubs.”

List of coefficients (cycle 2019-2024):

1. England – 89,178 (4) 2. Spain – 75,989 (4) 3. Italy – 71,712 (4) 4. Germany – 69,767 (4) 5. Netherlands – 55,100 (3)
6. France – 52,331 (2) 7. Portugal – 48,316 (1) 8. Belgium – 38,400 (1) 9. Turkey – 32,850 (1) 10. Scotland – 31,650 (1)

Portugal performs dramatically in Conference League

Portugal has so far had a hate-hate relationship with the Conference League launched in 2021, precisely the gold mine for the Netherlands with, among other things, a final place for Feyenoord (2022) and a semi-final place for AZ (2023).

Also last summer, things went wrong again for the Primeira Liga in the new tournament. Both FC Arouca and Vitória SC got stuck in the qualifications, as a result of which Portugal’s deficit on the Netherlands (and France) only grew.
