PCB Asks Babar Azam to Step Down as Opener in T20 Team Against New Zealand

Islamabad: Babar Azam, who resigned as the captain of the Pakistan cricket team, has been asked by the PCB to remove him from the position of opener. The decision of the Pakistan Cricket Board is to consider the new star as an opener along with Mohammad Rizwan in the Twenty20 team against New Zealand. The first match of the five-match series will be played in Auckland, New Zealand on January 12. The young player Saim Ayub will play as the opening batsman in the series. PCB reckons that it would be better for the youngster to go out with wicketkeeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan.

In that case, Babar will have to go down in the batting position. Saim Ayub made his Test debut for Pakistan in the Sydney Test against Australia last week. Pakistan had also considered removing Rizwan from the opener’s role. But after Rizwan held a discussion with the team director and coach, the Pak team backtracked from this decision.

Babar Azam will go into bat against New Zealand with one down. Fakhar Zaman will be the fourth in the batting. Former Pakistan captain Moeen Khan’s son Azam Khan will be the wicketkeeper against New Zealand. Pakistan is going to face New Zealand under pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi. This will be Shaheen’s first match in the role of Twenty20 captain. Mohammad Rizwan is the vice captain.

Babar Azam resigned as Pakistan captain after poor performance in ODI World Cup held in India. Babar Pak informed the team management that he is no longer interested in leading the team in all three formats. Pakistan, who came to the World Cup as the number one ODI team, were eliminated without reaching the semi-finals. Pakistan lost five of the nine matches they played. This was also the World Cup edition in which Pakistan lost more matches.
