PBNU Chairman clarifies his relationship with PKB: Never been a member

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – General Chairman (Ketum) of the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) Executive Board, Yahya Cholil Staquf or Gus Yahya, said that until now he had never come out as a member of the National Awakening Party (PKB).

He conveyed this in a press conference at the PBNU Office, Jalan Kramat Raya, Central Jakarta, Friday (15/9/2023).

Initially, the media crew asked about the relationship between PKB and PBNU, which was considered to be not harmonious since Gus Yahya led the largest Islamic mass organization.

Gus Yahya then said that the relationship between PBNU and PKB was really not close, as was the case with other political parties.

“It’s not close, it’s not as close as PBNU’s relationship with other parties, because we consider all of these to be the same,” said Gus Yahya.

He then touched on how PKB was born from the womb of NU, driven by himself and the PBNU administrators at that time.

The reason PBNU formed PKB at that time was because there were many figures who asked that there be a party that could accommodate the votes of Nahdliyin residents.

However, Gus Yahya emphasized that PBNU is only the parent of PKB which cannot continue to feed the votes of Nahdliyin residents.

“Please compete with others rationally, and we also invite the public, especially NU members, we invite the public to evaluate the parties rationally,” he said.

Gus Yahya then mentioned that he was the leader who participated in fighting for the birth of PKB.

In fact, he revealed that his house in Rembang was often used as a meeting place to finalize the PKB.

“And I have never left PKB until today. However, as General Chair of PBNU, as General Chair of PBNU I cannot drag NU into PKB,” said Gus Yahya.

“Just as it is not permissible to drag NU into other parties to support this candidate, that candidate, because it is not permitted by organizational norms,” ​​he emphasized.
