Telegram founder Pavel Durov said that his mother’s family comes from Ukraine, and he himself fluently understands the Ukrainian language.

He reported this on his Telegram channel.

As the businessman wrote, he first began studying Ukrainian as a teenager and was “fascinated by the differences and similarities between the Ukrainian and Russian languages.”

In 2008, Durov decided to make a Ukrainian-language version of VKontakte, after which he visited Kyiv, where he really liked it, and returned to the Ukrainian capital many times.

After 2022, he started learning Ukrainian using the DuoLingo app. And now he’s watching Ukrainian-language channels on Telegram. As a side effect of learning Ukrainian, he developed an understanding of other Slavic languages, particularly Polish and Czech.

He added that Ukraine makes up less than 3% of Telegram’s global audience. At the same time, more than 70% of Ukrainians, according to his data, use the messenger to exchange messages and news.

Earlier, Telegram disabled chat bots of Ukrainian security forces; the messenger stated that this happened “due to a false positive.”

Durov also recently told journalist Tucker Carlson how the Kremlin demanded that he give up information about the organizers of Euromaidan. He stated that before this he was required to ban public spaces on VK that gathered people for protests in the Russian Federation.
