Dresden – 20.09.2021

The body of the Catholic priest Herbert Jungnitsch, who died 50 years ago, is apparently to be exhumed for a paternity test. This was reported by the “Sächsische Zeitung” (Monday), citing diocesan districts. The diocese of Dresden-Meißen said on request that a person had contacted them who had asked for help with a procedure to determine the possible paternity of Jungnitsch. The diocese has no objection to this.

In addition, the diocese had named the inquiring person a lawyer who could help in such a procedure, it said. The diocese, as it was not involved in the proceedings, did not know whether this procedure was initiated or which further processes were planned. According to the newspaper, an application for exhumation has been submitted to the court.

Jungnitsch (1898-1971) built up the Catholic parish in Heidenau after the Second World War and had a decisive influence on it until his death. According to the diocese, several cases of sexual and physical violence against at least four girls between the ages of four and eight are credibly known from this time. The case is considered one of the most serious in the diocese of Dresden-Meißen. Last Thursday, a community meeting was held in the presence of the diocese leadership and those affected to publicly deal with the acts of abuse. (KNA)
