Passenger Train Resumes Service After Accident on Leiden-The Hague Route

The first passenger train since the train accident on April 4 will pass Voorschoten station on Thursday morning. From then on it will again be possible to travel by train between Leiden and The Hague according to the normal timetable.

Repairing the track after the accident involving two trains and a construction crane, which killed one person, was expected to take until Tuesday. It was later announced that train traffic would resume on Friday, but the track is now ready a day earlier.

ProRail reports that, among other things, the track has been renewed, safety systems have been re-installed and tested and the overhead wires have been repaired. The broken sleepers have also been replaced.

According to the railway manager, the construction crane came too early, too close or had ended up on the track. As a result, the freight train collided with the crane. Not much later, the passenger train ran on the wreckage of the crane, which had ended up on another track.

The driver of the crane was killed. About thirty people were injured, nineteen of whom had to be taken to a hospital. There is currently one person in the hospital.
