Partying in a plastic bubble: ‘You can only go in it for ten minutes’

Event locations and concert halls are looking hard for opportunities to organize something, but the corona measures make that difficult.

“We are looking at how we can still organize something. It would be nice if something was possible again, but for music events it will be very limited”, says Linda de Boer of Evenementenhal Hardenberg. The last big party at the event location was in January. However, a festival was held with a live stream, so that people could party remotely.

In America, therefore, something new was recently tried: the hundred people present at the concert of The Flaming Lips were seated in a plastic bubble. Such a bubble is airtight and that would ensure that people can sing, shout and dance safely again.

De Boer likes the fact that many such initiatives are being devised, but is still somewhat skeptical about this. “Going to the toilet is difficult, and I think it is also difficult to have a drink or some food in such a ball.”

But how realistic is it actually to attend a concert in such a plastic bubble? “We keep a maximum of eight to ten minutes in the ball,” says Henri Schröer of Aktiefun Harderberg, a company that rents such balls. If you sit in it longer, the oxygen can run out, resulting in nausea or even fainting.

Not suitable

To stay in the ball longer, the air should be constantly refreshed. The ball can also soften a bit after a while. “And you need help to get in or out, which also puts you within a meter and a half of each other. It’s a nice idea, but it seems to me unsuitable for a concert”, says Schröer.
