The Ballermann hit “Layla” by DJ Robin & Schürze may not be played at the Kiliani folk festival in Würzburg. How sexist is the song? Not only the Bavarian city is arguing about this.

The city of Würzburg has banned the playing of the Ballermann song “Layla” at the Kiliani folk festival, as reported by several media across Germany.

Christian Weiß, spokesman for the city, explains to our newspaper that the city, as the organizer of the folk festival, sees itself as having a responsibility here. “We don’t want any sexist, racist or extremist songs at our festival,” he explained. First, the “Main-Post” reported on the ban.

The song by DJ Robin & Schürze, which is about a brothel operator, has been in the German charts for weeks. The song is criticized mainly because of lines like “I have ‘a whorehouse’ and my whorehouse mom’s name is Layla, she’s prettier, younger, hornier”.

“Donaulied” will ensure a decision by the city council in 2021

The Ballermann hit is apparently not the only song that cannot be played at the festival in Würzburg. Since 2021 there has been a decision by the city council in Würzburg that stipulates that sexist and racist songs may not be played at such folk festivals. This was probably preceded by a discussion about the “Donaulied”, in which rape is glorified.

The decision in Würzburg caused a stir online. But it’s not the first time that the song “Layla” has hit the headlines. A few weeks ago, the song was also played at the Hessentag of the Junge Union in Kassel. Footage shows delegates gathering on stage to the song. At that time, too, there was already criticism on the Internet, especially since it was a political event.
