Parking Payable in Reims: Residents Rally Against New Charges and Launch Petition

In Reims (Marne), parking will become payable in the eastern districts of the city from April. Residents and traders are up in arms and have launched a petition.

In a few weeks, parking will become payable in many streets east of Reims (Marne). Anne Hubert lives in one of the areas concerned. This decision makes her angry. “I find that there is a denial of democracy, because we, the users of the streets, were not questioned,” she regrets. “We are also in a residential area, where there are neither commerce or tourism.”

She launched a petition which has gathered a thousand signatures to date. We find in particular the name of Dominique Defraeye, another resident of the area who is a little resigned to the town hall’s decision. “It is perhaps also a blessing in disguise compared to certain vehicles which remain parked there for days and days without moving and which are not necessarily people who live in the neighborhood”he confides.

Residents will be able to benefit from a preferential rate of 70 cents per day, as in other paying sectors of the city. But those who come to work are not affected by these lowered prices.

Christian Tronchon is the manager of a store located on a street where parking will become charged. He worries about his employees. “They all come by car because they don’t necessarily live in the neighborhood. If we work at one euro an hour, it costs them eight euros a day.”

“In every decision, there are always those who are satisfied and those who are less satisfied. Indeed, for employees, we have not yet found the solution, apart from parking on neighboring streets,” recognizes Claude Gachet, deputy mayor of Reims in charge of parking.

With this extension of paid parking, the town hall wishes to revitalize the neighborhoods now concerned, with a greater rotation of parked cars, while promoting soft mobility such as cycling or the bus. In the Gosset, Jamain and Saint-Marceaux sectors, the changeover is planned for April 2.
