The new measures are necessary because Paris, after the southern French metropolis of Marseille and the overseas territory of Guadeloupe, has now reached the highest corona alert phase.
The number of infections in the capital has been above the critical threshold of 250 per 100,000 inhabitants for days. In the over-65s, the infection rate is 100 per 100,000.
In the Ile-de-France region, of which Paris is a part, more than 30 percent of hospital beds are now occupied by corona patients. There is a fear that hospitals will become oversaturated next month if no action is taken now.
