Paris Faces Bed Bug Invasion: Health Concerns Rise

Jakarta

After being hit by a ‘tsunami’ of rats, Parisians now have to deal with an invasion of bed bugs which have spread across a number of transportation and public facilities. The number of bed bugs in Paris is said to be increasing, which could be dangerous to health.

As reported by The Guardian, a wave of panic and disgust has spread across the country as travelers upload photos and videos showing an invasion of the insects on Paris’ local transport system, high-speed trains and at Charles de Gaulle airport.

Some passengers on the Paris Métro or local trains insist that they will stand from now on, because they are afraid of sitting in their seats. Meanwhile, fumigation companies reported an increase in demand for cleaning private homes.

Speaking to French TV station LCI, the deputy mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Gregoire, said that the phenomenon of bedbug infestations had spread to several points in Paris.

“It must be understood that in reality nothing is safe, there are obviously risk factors, but the reality is that bed bugs can be infected anywhere and brought home,” said Gregoire.

Three years ago, the French government launched an anti-bedbug campaign, which includes a dedicated website and information hotline, as numbers of the insects soared. But Gregoire said despite the plans, 3.6 million people come to Paris every day, and the bed bugs don’t stop at the city’s outskirts.

Bed bug bites affect each person differently. Bite responses can range from no physical signs of a bite, to small bite marks, to serious allergic reactions. Bed bugs are not considered dangerous, but allergic reactions to some bites may require medical attention.
