Paris accuses Russia of wanting a ”blood curtain” between itself and Europe

With the war in Ukraine, Russia wants to create a “curtain of blood” with its European neighbors, French Secretary of State for Europe Laurence Boone said on Thursday.

Ms Boone welcomed the granting of EU candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova as “vital” for these countries, adding: “There can be no half measures when Russia chooses to draw a curtain of blood between itself and its neighborhood”.

Ukraine, scene of ‘unspeakable crimes’ by Russian forces, is caught up in ‘a war it must win because its future and ours are at stake’, she told debate on the French presidency of the EU which ended at the end of June.

The Secretary of State was pleased that the 27 had “collectively responded with unprecedented sanctions, unprecedented in their scale” to the Russian invasion. The goal, she continued, is to “make the war economically, financially and militarily unsustainable for Russia.” She also considered that the EU had “broken a major taboo” by financing armaments for kyiv. For the EU, “the time for strategic innocence is over”, stressed Ms Boone.
