A very old tradition
In 525 BC, a silver coin was minted at Elis in Greece to commemorate the victory of an athlete at the sacred site of Olympia. The tradition continued until the end of the Ancient Games in 393, recalls the OCOG in a press release. It was at the Helsinki Olympic Games in 1952 that the tradition of Olympic coins was reborn with a silver coin.
