“Pansija pilī”: Historical Film Series Premieres in Latvia, Featuring Cultural Figures of the 1920s

In general, the film of the seven-act cinema series depicts exciting and comical events, in which the future writer Anšlavs Eglītis, together with his brother Vidvud, father Viktor and his spouse Hilda Vīkas, start the renovation of the manor and at the same time establish a boarding house, which becomes a resident of the area, a ghost of the past, a guest of the city and a Latvian. the intersection of intelligentsia relations and the scene of one summer in Latvia in the 20s of the 20th century, according to the filmmakers.

The novel “Pansija pilī”, the motifs of which are included in the plot of the series, is a work characterized by an intense plot, humor and reflections, which provides an insight into the life of the Latvian elite in the 1920s and 1930s. Similar to the novel, the film also tells about the efforts of a young family to restore property granted by the state and portrays the most prominent cultural figures of that time – A. Eglīš’s father, poet Viktor Eglītis and painter Hilda Vīkas, poet, writer Edvartas Virzas, painters Konrād Ubānas, Voldemāras Toni, Romana Suta and publisher Miķeli Gopera.

These historical heroes of the novel by A.Egliš are played in the film by actors Gundars Āboliņš, Rihards Zelezņevs, Kristians Teterovskis, Guna Zariņa, Vilis Daudziņš, Kaspars Znotiņš, Juris Strenga, Dana Bjorka, Dace Evers, Lāsma Kugrēna, Jānis Jarāns, Alice Dzene and many others.

It should be noted that the action of the novel takes place in the new property of the Egliš family in Inciema, Turaida parish, but for the artistic purposes of the film, the surroundings of Kuldīga county and the Padure manor were used. Filming took place there in the summer of 2023, while already at the end of January 2024, the first series premiered on the big screen.

Shortly after the premiere in the capital, at the end of January, the first two episodes of the film have already been shown at the Jelgava House of Culture and, in response to demand, will be shown again in an additional screening on February 10. The total length of the show will be 110 minutes. Further series and screenings in Jelgava will be available together with the premieres of new series. Namely, on February 18 at 2 p.m., the 3rd and 4th episodes of the film will be shown at the Culture House (total screening length 110 minutes), while on February 25 at 4 p.m. the 5th, 6th, and 7th episodes of the film will also be shown (total screening length 165 minutes).

The price of a ticket for one screening is 5 euros, and it can be purchased at any “Bilešu paradize” box office or online at www.bilesuparadize.lv.

The directors of the film are Andis Mizišs, Marta Elīna Martinsone, Dāvis Sīmanis and Gints Grūbe, the cinematographer: Andrejs Rudzāts, the producers: Inese Boka-Grūbe and Gints Grūbe, the script was created by Tabita Rudzāte and Ivo Briedis, the main artist of the film is Kristīne Jurjāne, the artist: Jānis Kalniņš, make-up artist: Ilze Trumpe, and costume designers: Kristīne Jurjāne and Rūta Kuplā. The film was made in the “Mistrus Media” film studio.
