Switzerland and Liechtenstein recorded 571 additional cases of coronavirus this weekend, compared to 453 last weekend. The trend has been on the rise since the end of June. The number of daily cases has not dropped below the 100 mark since August 3. He crossed the 300 mark on Wednesday and Friday, for the first time since April 19. On Saturday, 295 new cases were announced. Sunday, 276.

Since the start of the pandemic, 39,903 cases of Covid-19 contamination have been confirmed out of 937,488 tests carried out, including 16,999 during the last 48 hours, according to the latest figures from theFederal Office of Public Health (OFSP). The total of deaths stands at 1,720, and that of people hospitalized at 4,490.

Technical problems

Switzerland also counted 1739 people in isolation on Sunday and 5,769 individuals who were part of their contacts were quarantined. To this were added 15,008 other people returning from a trip from a country at risk and who also had to go through the quarantine box.

Saturday, a laboratory had not been able to provide figures for technical reasons, had specified the FOPH on Twitter. We can expect further announcements in the coming days.

Wearing the mask

Since mid-June, it is mainly the cantons that have been responsible for managing the increase in coronavirus cases. In recent weeks, several of them have decided to strengthen measures to fight the coronavirus, in particular by making it compulsory to wear a mask in stores or schools.

In Geneva, cycle teachers want the wearing of masks to be made compulsory for both teachers and students in their establishments. They wrote to State Councilor Anne Emery-Torracinta on Saturday. According to them, the “pre-school week was marked by a number of intolerable situations” due to the lack of a clarified approach.

Concern across Sarine

Concern is also mounting in German-speaking Switzerland. Zurich mayor Corine Mauch therefore believes that the obligation to wear masks should be extended, for example in public buildings or in shops. In view of the high number of cases of coronavirus, the city of Zurich is in a worrying situation, she says in an interview with the “NZZ am Sonntag”.

The cantonal government has taken good note of her appeal, she assures us. And the elected socialist added that it is crucial to react before losing control. “No one has an interest in Zurich being declared a risk zone and no one wants more and more people to be quarantined.”

Mask obligation

The canton of Bern provides for the wearing of a compulsory mask in shops and confined spaces if the number of infections exceeds 35 per day, government president Pierre-Alain Schnegg said in an interview with the “Bund” on Saturday. He also defined as a criterion the number of 47 cases per 100,000 inhabitants for fourteen days.

The canton will also take into account “other parameters, such as the occupation of beds in hospitals,” said the Minister of Health. The number of new infections has long hovered around ten, before rising to twenty in recent days. On Saturday, five people were still hospitalized in the township, including two in intensive care.
