The number of deaths from Covid-19 worldwide has exceeded the 400,000 barrier, according to data provided today by John Hopkins University in the United States of America (USA).
Just before 10:30 am (3:30 pm in Lisbon) today, the number of deaths across the planet reached 400,243, while the number of infected people exceeded 6.9 million people.
According to the university center, the USA is the country with the most deaths, 109,802, which represents one third of those registered worldwide; followed by the United Kingdom, with 40,548; Brazil, with 35,930; Italy which registered 33,846 since the beginning of the pandemic and Spain, with 27,135.
With regard to the number of infected, Johns Hopkins University says that the five countries with the highest number are: the USA, with 1,920,061 contagions; Brazil (672,846); Russia (467,073); the United Kingdom (286,295), and India where at least 247,857 people contracted the virus.
According to the Spanish agency Efe, the data released in Brazil were even suspended by the university after, on Saturday, the President of the Brazilian Government, Jair Bolsonaro, restricted the publication of consolidated data on cases and deaths.
In view of the pandemic’s progress, many countries have closed their borders and limited the movement of their population, although these restrictions have been gradually lifted in some countries such as the USA.
And it is precisely in the USA where massive protests against racism against African Americans have been registered in recent days, which raises concerns on the part of health experts, since these concentrations, where clusters of people shout and sometimes take away the mask, favor the spread of the new coronavirus.
