Panama reaches 7,297 deaths from covid-19 and 470,598 cases

Panama City, Oct 19 (EFE) .- The Ministry of Health of Panama (Minsa) reported this Tuesday 203 new cases of covid-19 and 3 deaths from the disease, making a total of 470,598 confirmed infections and 7,297 deaths in more than 18 months of pandemic.

Of the three deaths reported by the Minsa in its daily report on the pandemic, 2 occurred in the last 24 hours and one is of an unspecified previous date.

There are 41 patients hospitalized for the coronavirus in Intensive Care Units (ICU) and 159 on the floor, while 1,973 are isolated at home and 83 in hotels, for a total of 2,256 active (contagious) cases.

According to data from the Minsa, of the total number of patients hospitalized since last January to date, 71% were not vaccinated, while 81.8% of the deceased did not have any dose against covid-19, predominating in this group men over 80 years old.

The report also indicates that the patients who have healed total 461,045 since March 9, 2020, when the first case of contagion occurred in Panama, where the covid has a lethality of 1.5%, one of the lowest in Latin America.

On this day, 7,246 tests were applied to detect covid cases, which yielded a positivity of 2.8%. To date, Panama has 3,999,401 tests applied.

Regarding the vaccination process, the data provided by the Minsa indicate that 76.6 of the target population that can receive the vaccine (people 12 years of age and older) have already complied with the complete immunization schedule against covid- 19.

The report also highlights that up to this Tuesday, 5,721,238 doses of vaccine against covid-19 have been applied, of which 3,028,081 correspond to first doses; 2,644,316 are second doses; 5,604 of third doses to immunosuppressed patients; and 43,237 are third booster doses.

Panama received this Tuesday a batch with 97,110 doses of vaccines against covid-19 from Pfizer, which brought to 6.6 million the immunizers delivered to the country since last January 20.

Pfizer has delivered 39 lots, including one of 503,100 doses donated by the US and another of 100,620 delivered through the Covax mechanism of the World Health Organization (WHO), according to official information.

Panama has committed the purchase of 7 million doses from Pfizer, 1.1 million from AstraZeneca and 1.1 million through the Covax multilateral mechanism, according to official data.

AstraZeneca has already delivered all the doses agreed through the bilateral agreement, to which the arrivals are added through the Covax mechanism, for a total of 1,286,400 portions, according to the data reported by the Minsa upon arrival of each batch. EFE
