Palliative Care for Young People with Dementia: Research Findings and the Role of GPs

In the Care4Youngdem-studie Doctor in training to become a researcher and specialist in geriatric medicine Jasper Maters (Radboud university medical center) conducts research into palliative care for young people with dementia in the broadest sense of the word: from health problems and (experienced) care to quality of life and proactive care planning. The research shows that people hardly talk about their wishes until they are admitted to a nursing home. ‘For me, this raises the question of whether we should have a way to pay structural attention to this, perhaps by the GP.’ It emerges that relatively young people, just like older people, usually opt for restrained treatment. Focused on quality of life, rather than on life extension. Maters: ‘A GP can use this fact to start the conversation about this last part of life in time.’
