Palisade Mesophyll Function, Definition and Structure

The main function of the palisade mesophyll is for photosynthesis. Because these cells contain many chloroplasts. The palisade cells contain intercellular spaces leading to spongy tissue intended for gas exchange.

Photosynthesis is the process of forming carbohydrates in the leaves. This process requires carbon dioxide, sunlight, and water.

The process starts from the stomata or leaf mouth. Through these stomata carbon dioxide will enter the leaf mesophyll. Then it will be more efficient if it is supported by palisade or spongy tissue in the leaf mesophyll.

While tissue culture is a method for isolating parts of plants. An example is a group of tissues or cells grown under aseptic conditions. That way, the plant is able to reproduce itself, then become a whole plant again.

Palisade Mesophyll Definition and Function

In general, plants have structures and tissues in their bodies. Includes roots, stems, leaves, and flowers. Before discussing the function of palisade mesophyll, we need to know the use of leaves for plants. Leaves are one of the organs on this plant has a very important role.

This is because leaves are the site of photosynthesis. So it has an arrangement consisting of mesophyll tissue, epidermis, and vascular bundles.

The main characteristic of this mesophyll cell is located between the upper and lower epidermis. It will then make up most of the leaf’s internal tissue. Even these cells vary in shape. It can even form a large network type.

Mesophyll comes from the Greek. From the word Mesos which means middle and Phyllo which means leaf. While the mesophyll consists of two layers of cells, namely spongy and palisade cells.

The function of the palisade mesophyll is as a tissue. In particular the place of palisade tissue or poles present on the leaves. Then as a network of sponges and sponges on the leaves.

The next function is the place where photosynthesis takes place to get food in the leaves. Finally, as a network to temporarily store photosynthetic results, gases, and minerals in the leaves.

Compiling Structure

As stated in the previous explanation, the function of the palisade mesophyll is related to two types of cells as their constituent structures. First, the palisade cells, collectively form the mesophyll tissue in the leaf.

It is located below the upper epidermis. Then composed of columnar-shaped cells. Important organelles of palisade cells are the nucleus, cell membrane, large vacuoles, and chloroplasts. There is a separation between the palisade cells that allows a variety of materials to flow.

The process of photosynthesis is affected by the structure and arrangement of palisade cells. Because they are elongated, palisade cells contain 70% chloroplasts.

The position of the palisade cell also gets the best place. So it can absorb more light for photosynthesis.

The layer of palisade cells beneath the epidermis is thin. Thus, allowing these cells to absorb as much as there is during photosynthesis.

Then for the spongy mesophyll cells located below the palisade tissue and above the lower epidermis. The shape of the cells of this sponge layer is round. Even in some irregular plants.

The cells are loosely packed and leave plenty of space between the cells. As in the palisade mesophyll function, this sponge cell contains organelles such as vacuoles, nucleus, chloroplasts, and cell membranes.

In either palisade or sponge cells, the content of crystal inclusions of mesophyll cells is smaller or shorter than that of other cells in the leaf area.

Lower Epidermis Function

The lower epidermis of the leaf serves to protect the leaf tissue above it. Examples are spongy tissue or sponges.

On the epidermis of the leaves, usually form stomata. Stomata are gaps in the leaf for air exchange. This is between the oxygen that is present during photosynthesis and the main ingredient in the form of carbon dioxide.

The function of stomata when transpiration or evaporation occurs from the leaves is as a place for the release of water vapor. Then the stomata will close if the leaves lack water. Meanwhile, the stomata will open if the leaves feel excess water.
