In Pakistan, after two Christians were accused of blaspheming the Koran, angry Muslim groups attacked several churches. Muslim mobs went to Christian neighborhoods where they set fire to one church and vandalized four others.

At least 20 houses of Christian families were also destroyed. They were looted and several were burned. There were no casualties in the attacks.

The Pakistani bishop expressed his regret and called on the authorities to provide stricter protection for Christians.

In Pakistan, where 96% of the population is Muslim, blasphemy of the Koran or any form of insult to Islam is punishable by death.

Christians make up less than two percent of Pakistan’s population and hold a low status in society. In recent years, there have been several attacks against the Christian community in Pakistan.
