‘Painful to be rejected twice in The Masked Singer’

“It was a very nice adventure, I thought it was amazing to experience. Really amazing”, says René van Kooten, who was hidden in the suit of the Pharaoh. “I thought so too,” adds the Scarecrow, better known as Marc-Marie Huijbregts. “It was weird because you get rejected twice in one night, in our case. Twice the audience says, ‘No, we don’t want him.'”

“But I really enjoyed doing it. The funny thing is, when you put the mask on you’re in a kind of bubble, you’re kind of brought in and you can see from a distance. That’s why it was very weird to wear the mask take it off, then it suddenly looks like you’re naked. Suddenly you’re standing there, I thought that was very spicy.”

René also thought it was crazy to take off the mask. “I would rather not have gone out, precisely because it is so much fun. I would have liked to stay in it for a while,” he says. “When the mask comes off, the whole adventure is over (…) It’s just a really fun adventure. You’re part of a kind of collective secret and that’s so much fun.”

Still, Marc-Marie was somehow happy, because the comedian saw nothing in his suit. “There was burlap and when the light came on it turned white on me,” he explains. It got better as the show went on, but he never got to see much. “The public is helping, yes.” René thinks so too: “If that room is full, you want to go all out.”

Not only the people in the suits, but also the suits themselves steal the show every episode. It is of course to be expected that quite a lot of work will go into this.

The Masked Singer can be seen every Friday at 8 p.m. on RTL 4.
