ÖVP as big winner, SPÖ stops downward trend, debacle for FPÖ

Mur-Mürz-Furche again colored solid red. After counting almost all municipalities and most large cities.

The ÖVP and the SPÖ can count themselves among the winners of the Styrian municipal council elections on Sunday – the first in Austria in times of Corona: After counting almost all of the 285 municipalities, the ÖVP won strongly across the country, the SPÖ easily, the blue ones lost in many municipalities. The small parties KPÖ, Greens and NEOS grew slightly. Voter turnout dropped by around 10 percentage points.

In some cities there were surprising changes of power, such as in the Upper Styrian pilgrimage town of Mariazell from SPÖ to ÖVP or in the railway town of Selzthal from SPÖ to ÖVP – an absolute sensation at the local level. The deep red iron ore was also lost to the blacks by the Social Democrats, and the traditionally strong KPÖ also lost mandates here. The Communists swung themselves up in Trofaiach in Upper Styria to become the clearly second-strongest party behind the SPÖ.

Here are all the results

The SPÖ was able to expand its majority in most of the Upper, West and East Styrian industrial cities and often even win a two-thirds majority – which had not been taken for granted in past elections. Although the ÖVP made many gains, it also lost sporadically: in Schladming and Haus im Ennstal, the majority went to citizen lists.

The KPÖ held its mandate, the FPÖ suffered severe losses, the Greens jumped well over 100 seats in the parish rooms. NEOS also succeeded in the modest area.

Mariazell is now turquoise: A change of power quickly became known after counting the votes in the pilgrimage town of Mariazell in Upper Styria: the SPÖ lost its absolute majority won in 2015 to the ÖVP. SPÖ Mayor Johann Kleinhofer admitted his defeat shortly after 1:30 p.m. in a Facebook post: “Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough! Congratulations to the new mayor: Walter Schweighofer.”

SPÖ-Absturz in Selzthal: The railway town of Selzthal saw a red disaster on Sunday: the SPÖ fell from 80.25 to 49.36 percent. The ÖVP took the mayor’s chair for the first time in decades, jumping from 19.75 to 50.64 percent.

In Gaishorn, Upper Styria, the SPÖ conquered the absolute with over 60 percent, especially at the expense of the citizen list. In some communities, such as Michaelerberg-Pruggern in the Enns Valley, the ÖVP climbed to light heights, at around 72 percent at the expense of the SPÖ and FPÖ. In Ramsau am Dachstein the liberties flew from the town council. The NEOS achieved 11.26 percent there straight away.

SPÖ won in almost all industrial cities

In most of the Styrian industrial cities, the SPÖ is the big winner of the municipal council elections: in Bruck an der Mur the Absolute was brought back on Sunday as well as in Weiz. There were also gains in Fohnsdorf, Knittelfeld and Mürzzuschlag. But the absolute and even 1st place was lost in Eisenerz. In Erzbergstadt, the ÖVP achieved a landslide victory with plus 24.81 points.

In the second largest city in Styria, in Leoben, counting the many election cards took a long time until late in the evening. But already in the evening there was a strong performance by the KPÖ. SPÖ Mayor Kurt Wallner is likely to hold his majority of 48.74 percent in 2015.

Only FPÖ mayor is lost

The only FPÖ mayor in the mining community of Breitenau (previously a halftime solution with the ÖVP) is history. The ÖVP brought the absolute from 33.65 to 57.68 percent. SPÖ and FPÖ (this time as a list) lost a lot. In Neuberg an der Mürz – home parish of FPÖ-Abg. Hannes Amersbauer has the Absolute, the FPÖ lost one of three GR mandates.

In Spital am Semmering, where the FPÖ had always played against asylum seekers, they lost from 17.4 percent to 6.95 percent. The SPÖ expanded its bastion here. The SPÖ surprised here and there: In Turnau (Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district), the young and committed mayor and LAbg. Stefan Hofer doubled from 48.32 to 80.07 percent and smashed blacks and blues.

ÖVP confidently increased: The ÖVP also achieved such political tricks, more often than the Reds: In Arnfels in southern Styria, the ÖVP grew from 32.37 to 80.82 percent. Not surprisingly, the ÖVP achieved 100 percent in Lassing because the People’s Party was the only party on the ballot. The voter turnout rattled down from 77.93 percent to 37.50 percent. The ÖVP now holds all 15 mandates of the community. In communities like Pernegg an der Mur, the ÖVP almost doubled its share to almost 64 percent.
