Overclocker Safedisk Falls Victim to Chinese Scammer with Fake Intel Core i9-14900K CPU

HKEPC publication shares the sad story of the famous overclocker Safedisk, who became a victim of a Chinese scammer after buying a non-working Intel Core i9-14900K.

To get to the bottom of the chip problem, the South Korean overclocking champion, in third place in the world, took the cover off the processor and found that the chip itself was missing. Under the heat spreader cover there was just an empty space where the CPU die should be.

According to HKEPC’s report on the scam involving the overclocker and the 14900K, he bought an Intel Core i9-14900K from a seller in mainland China. Safedisk certainly has an abundance of processor samples, but his curiosity may have been driven by prices, packaging, or product descriptions. With the chip in hand, everything looked a bit dubious from the start. The processor arrived in a blister pack with a sticker stating that the warranty would be void if the pack was opened. This message does not indicate great confidence in the product and is certainly not official Intel policy.

After installing the CPU, the boot did not occur, and it is very likely that Safedisk was not surprised at this point. Perhaps such an experienced overclocker would even be able to notice that the chip was losing silicon. Faced with a dead processor that looked normal on the outside, Safedisk decided to physically check what was inside. A couple of minutes of fiddling with the tool to remove the lid gave me a big surprise. There was an empty space where a silicon die would normally be attached to a green substrate, and this is definitely not how the silicon die is supposed to work.

Customers should be careful about spending their hard-earned money on offers from disreputable sellers or buying things at very dubious prices. Yes
consider this other warning, and, of course, scammers live and do their dastardly deeds all over the world, and not only in China. Apparently the enthusiast wasn’t too upset or lost a lot of money as a result of this experience with a non-working 14900K.
