Overall survival in patients with early-stage triple-negative breast cancer

Triple negative immunophenotype breast cancer tends to have the worst prognosis.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the overall survival in patients with triple negative breast cancer, according to patient characteristics, tumor and treatment. present study, recently published in the Cuban Journal of Oncology.

A descriptive, longitudinal, and retrospective investigation was carried out in 285 patients treated at the Oncology Service of the Hospital “Hermanos Ameijeiras”. The main variable of analysis was overall survival.

The authors report that patients older than 50 years (75.5%) and with white skin (65.9%) predominated. The most frequent type of tumor was infiltrating ductal carcinoma (81.7%), stage II A (33.1%), with a size less than five centimeters (45.9%), negative axillary nodes (59.7%) , degree of differentiation III (83.8%). The treatment most used was surgical with chemo-radiotherapy (51.0%).

Overall survival at five and ten years was 75.9% (95% CI – 73.2, 78.6) and 65.1% (95% CI – 61.7, 68.5), respectively. The variables associated with better survival were: age less than 50 years, white skin, tumors smaller than 2 cm, negative nodes, clinical stages I-II, and without vascular permeation, as well as chemotherapy treatment with regimens containing anthracyclines, and combination of surgery with chemo-radiotherapy (p < 0,05).

It is concluded that the clinical and demographic characteristics of the patients, and the results in terms of survival are similar to those reported in the international literature. Further studies are needed in the search for new prognostic and predictive factors.
