Over 9 million for the Telethon in 2019

Tahiti, January 8, 2020 – The Telethon has raised more than 9 million Fcfp in 2019 in French Polynesia, announced on Wednesday the local coordinator of the event organized on December 6 and 7 to collect funds against myopathies and rare diseases.

The coordinator of the Telethon in French Polynesia, Serge Le Naour, announced Wednesday that more than 9 million Fcfp in donations had been collected at fenua during the 2019 edition of the charity operation. A figure lower than the record of 12 million Fcfp harvested in 2018, while at the national level the trend is opposite with a total amount of funds raised increased from 8.3 to 8.9 billion Fcfp. The operation carried out on December 6 and 7, however, brought together dozens of events and collections organized in Tahiti, Moorea, Raiatea and even as far as the Marquesas.

The money collected as part of the Telethon is used to finance wheelchairs, special equipment for people with an illness. And above all, it makes it possible to finance research projects on neuromuscular genetic diseases (myopathies, etc.), essentially, but also on other rare genetic diseases. The exact number of people with myopathies and rare diseases in Polynesia is not known, their number is estimated at 150 to 200 people.
