Over 6 million vehicles on Swiss roads

More than 6.1 million motor vehicles were driven on Swiss roads in 2019, an increase of 0.8% over one year, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) released on Friday.

The car fleet increased by 0.5% to 4.6 million units. The motorization rate in the country stood at 541 cars per 1,000 inhabitants last year, down slightly from 2018 (543).

Of the 312,900 cars newly put into circulation last year, 13,200 were purely electric, representing a share of 4.2% on new registrations in 2019, the OFS said in a statement.

Registrations of electric vehicles more than doubled in 2019 (+ 143.9%), while those of cars with petrol engines (+ 1.9%) rose only moderately. Diesel propulsion declined (-11.9%).

Diesel-powered cars represent a 29.9% share of the total vehicle fleet, a stable percentage. On the other hand, that of petrol cars fell by 0.6 point to 67%.

Among the other categories of motor vehicles, the motorcycle fleet grew by 0.7% to 744,542 units and that of freight transport by 2.8% to 440,795.
