The sixth Corona test street in Vienna will open at Schönbrunn Palace on Thursday. Including the expansion of the existing test station in the city hall, around 205,000 antigen tests per week will be possible from Saturday, said City Councilor for Health Peter Hacker at a media meeting.
The test roads at the Happel Stadium, on the Danube Island and at the Austria Center have been in existence in Vienna for months. Recently the town hall and a school at the Alterlaa residential park were added. Finally, the Schönbrunn location will also be available from Thursday. For this purpose, two drive-in lines for up to 1,200 people per day will be set up at the new bus parking lot and three walk-in lines for up to 2,250 tests per day in the orangery opposite.

From Thursday: Test street at Schönbrunn Palace in operation
This means that a gap in the city’s test network will now be closed, said Hacker happily on Wednesday lunchtime when he visited the location: “The west of Vienna has been our weak point so far.” In view of the imperial backdrop, the head of department joked about “one of the greatest places in Europe where you can do a Covid test”. And he gave the all-clear: “You don’t have to come here in tails.” However, as with the five other test roads, it is very important to register or make an appointment online or by telephone via the health hotline 1450.

Wiener Stadthalle increases test capacities
In addition to the new test center Schönbrunn, the city is also significantly increasing the test capacities in the city hall from Saturday. Instead of the current 4,500, up to 9,000 people can have their virus status checked there per day – that is, doubling.

Including ongoing screening programs such as gurgle tests in schools or in the city council, as well as smears in the health and care sector and, last but not least, in the 30 cold checkboxes, Vienna will hold up to around 330,000 possible Covid tests per week from the weekend, according to the City Council’s office. And that’s not the end of the story, said Hacker. On Friday he wants to present further expansion steps in this direction.

“We are trying to face the pandemic,” said the head of department. You always have to be faster than the virus – and, for example, find infected people who do not yet show any signs of illness. This can be achieved with a wide range of tests. Even now, on some days, around a third of the Viennese who tested positive were symptom-free.
