Over 11,000 Participants Disqualified for Cheating in Mexico City Marathon

More than 11,000 people were disqualified after cheating in a marathon held in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico.

According to Mexican daily newspaper Reforma, etc., in the marathon held on the 27th of last month, local time, it was belatedly revealed that 11,000 out of 30,000 participants deceived as if they had completed the course without running properly.

It was found that the cheaters failed to pass the checkpoints installed every 5km of the entire 42.195km course.

All of the disqualified players were known as regular participants, and the organizers found that they moved by public transportation or bicycles in between.

Local media analyzed that this cheating was for the purpose of receiving a finisher medal rather than for the purpose of shortening the record.

The Mexico City Marathon is awarded the “Gold Label” by the World Association of Athletics Federations for competitions that meet the strictest standards.

Nevertheless, in the corresponding competitions in 2017 and 2018, about 6,000 and 3,000 players, respectively, were stripped of their medals for completing the trick.
