ÖTV Youngster Advances in US Open Doubles Competition

The ÖTV youngster is still in the running in the youth competition in Flushing Meadows only in doubles.

Full of self-confidence, Joel Schwärzler traveled on to the US Open in New York after winning the double at the ITF J300 preparatory tournament in Repentigny. But the 17-year-old probably paid a little tribute to the exertions of the past week, with five singles and four doubles matches in six days and then only one Sunday without a match. In any case, the young Vorarlberger lost in the first round of the youth Grand Slam tournament in Flushing Meadows in the individual competition. The 13th seeded left-hander (ITF 11) had to admit defeat to Australian Pavle Marinkov (ITF 46) on Monday 5:7, 6:7 (5). In doubles, however, Schwärzler later made it into the round of 16 with Italian Federico Bondioli, with whom he had triumphed in Canada. At the start, the two beat the Norwegian Nicolai Budkov Kjaer and the German Lasse Pörtner 6: 4, 6: 7 (5) and 10: 3 in the match tiebreak.

Schwärzler literally experienced an Australian déjà vu against Marinkov, after all he had already been eliminated at the Australian Open in Melbourne at the beginning of the year in round one with 4:6, 5:7 against the “Aussie” of the same age. Only last week he got revenge in the Repentigny round of 16 with a 6: 3, 7: 5, but at the US Open Marinkov turned the tables again. Schwärzler was able to fend off two break chances in the first and seventh game, then missed two of them himself at 4:3 and finally lost the first round after losing service to 5:6. In the second set, the ÖTV contract player, who works in Südstadt under ÖTV sports director and Davis Cup captain Jürgen Melzer, led 3-0 and 4-1, but after a break in the rain it went into a tie-break. There, after being 2: 5 and 4: 6 behind, Schwärzler managed the mini break to 5: 6 at the last moment – but only to then concede another one himself to lose the match.

It went better in doubles. Bondioli/Schwärzler had to accept the set equalization after a hard fight, but did not lose any more points in the tie-break match from 3:3. Your opponents in the fight for a place in the quarterfinals are first determined. Either the US twin brothers Kaylan and Meecah Bigun or the Italians Fabio de Michele and Gabriele Vulpitta are waiting on Wednesday.
