Osimhen: Moving to Saudi Arabia “would have changed my life”

In the summer, Napoli star Victor Osimhen was the focus of Saudi club Al-Hilal’s shopping spree. He could have earned around 60 million francs a year.

the essentials in brief

  • Al-Hilal tried unsuccessfully to sign Napoli star Victor Osimhen in the summer.
  • The Nigerian turned down an offer that would have “changed my life”.
  • Instead, he decided to stay in Serie A.

The transfer frenzy among top Saudi clubs in the summer knew no bounds. Al-Hilal alone – currently leaders in the Saudi Pro League – spent around 350 million francs on new star signings. The biggest name was Neymar, who will now be out for months after tearing his cruciate ligament.

But Al-Hilal was also courting another superstar – and if successful would have reached the 500 million mark: The Blue Waves offered around 150 million francs for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian now confirmed this in the “Obi One Podcast” by ex-professional footballer John Obi Mikel.

“The more I said no, the more they offered.”

Osimhen admits that Napoli rejected the offers, but he himself looked into it seriously. It was a “tremendous decision” that the offer from Saudi Arabia presented him with. “The offer would have changed my life,” said the Nigerian about the salary increase that he waived.

«It was crazy. The more I said no, the more they offered,” says the Nigerian, describing the Saudi courtship shortly before the transfer deadline. “They never gave up until the end of the transfer window.”

Ultimately, he made a decision for the good of his career. “In the end I said I would stay. I had to make a decision that was also good for my career. “We footballers play for money, of course, but it’s about so much more,” says Osimhen.
