The first black man to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor is dead.

This is confirmed by Louis Gossett’s nephew for AP.

Louis Gossett Jr‘s nephew confirms the actor died Thursday night in Santa Monica, California. The cause of death is unclear.

Gossett Jr. became the first black man to win a Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in the movie “An Officer and a Gentleman.” He also won an Emmy for the mini-series “Roots”, which was a great success worldwide. He also won a Golden Globe for the same role.
